"Allow the practice to become your dance!"
Ultimately the practice is about bringing us back to our true nature, that of being peaceful, joyous and balanced, and feeling our connection intimately with all of creation.
The emphasis in my own practice and teaching is in on moving intuitively from one posture to another, embracing the resistances we encounter with the breath and then surrendering completely allowing the body to unfold without force.
As we advance through our practice of asanas we can start to internalise our awareness, guide the prana through mental focus to the blockages and perhaps go deeper still by meditating on the associated chakra or vital organ that we are affecting. When we are performing the asanas slowly and mindfully the benefits are already apparent without us having to wait till after its completion.
I like the class to flow, moving through the classical series of asanas with advanced variations depending on level of students. Pranayama, kriyas and meditation form part of every class and each one will give consideration to working on specific areas such as hip opening sequences or backward bending.
Prior to my formal training, which started in 2004 with the Sivananda TTC (Teachers Training Course), I had been practicing hatha and ashtanga since 1998. However, I began to deepen my practice of hatha yoga after meeting Fausto Dorelli of Innergy Yoga (London, UK) in 2003. Fausto was a great inspiration as a teacher as well as a human being and was key in starting my process of self-inquiry. I continued to study with Fausto until 2007 when I left the UK. In 2007 I met Dr Das of the Patanjali Yoga Foundation (Rishikesh, India) and began further training completing the Advanced Teacher Training in 2008 and Ayurvedic Healing Yoga certified course in 2009.
