Born in a Hindu Brahmin family amidst the serene valleys and rolling hills of far Northeast India, Tapashi was introduced to asanas very early in her life by her father, while her mother passed on the wisdom of ancient Hindu philosophies, and the subtle meanings of Sanskrit shlokas and mantras. This ancestral wisdom has brought her a deep understanding of the subtleties of oriental philosophy and the connections between body, mind and spirit. She has since undergone various trainings with Indian, Chinese and western teachers in different traditions to deepen her understanding of the human body and mind.
Tapashi is deeply intrigued by the ancient healing techniques passed down as esoteric wisdom. She is passionate about re-introducing this wisdom to the contemporary world. Tapashi teaches meditation, mantra chanting and asanas in addition to subtler yogic practices of energetic gestures (mudras) and locks (bandhas). Her yoga classes offer a taste of all of these in simple, meditative and fluid movements. Tapashi's style of teaching is a blend of very traditional hatha yoga with influences from tai-chi.
The Sanskrit word 'Yoga' is a noun meaning 'union' referring to a state of being. Tapashi believes that 'Yoga' cannot be taught, it can only be experienced. Her classes aim to make this experience accessible to the modern body-mind.
